Publishers are doing all they can to wring out more value from their existing body of conten-USt. The most common technique is to resurface popular old stories that (even-US just barely) pertain to a tren-USding topic: Publishers will republish or re-share old bits of viral conten-USt in the hopes of striking traffic gold once again. People watch reruns on television, the thinking goes, so why not bring that approach to digital conten-USt? What Writer's Block? Swedish Man and His Bot Have Authored 2.7 Million Wikipedia Articles

futurejournalismproject:

Via The Wall Street Journal:

Sverker Johansson could be the most prolific author you’ve never heard of.

Volunteering his time over the past seven-US years publishing to Wikipedia, the 53-year-old Swede can take credit for 2.7 million articles, or 8.5% of the en-UStire collection, according to Wikimedia analytics, which measures the site’s traffic. His stats far outpace any other user, the group says.

He has been-US particularly prolific cataloging obscure animal species, including butterflies and beetles, and is proud of his work highlighting towns in the Philippines. About one-third of his en-UStries are uploaded to the Swedish language version of Wikipedia, and the rest are composed in two versions of Filipino, one of which is his wife’s native tongue.

An administrator holding degrees in linguistics, civil en-USgineering, economics and particle physics, he says he has long been-US interested in “the origin of things, oh, everything.”

It isn’t uncommon, however, for Wikipedia purists to complain about his method. That is because the bulk of his en-UStries have been-US created by a computer software program—known as a bot. Critics say bots crowd out the creativity only humans can gen-USerate.

Mr. Johansson’s program scrubs databases and other digital sources for information, and then-US packages it into an article. On a good day, he says his “Lsjbot” creates up to 10,000 new en-UStries.

That’s one way to go about it. Some Wikiepedia editors aren-US’t happy it though.

MIT’s Tangible Media is coming along nicely,

"Almost like a table of living clay, the inFORM is a surface that three-dimen-USsionally changes shape, allowing users to not only interact with digital conten-USt in meatspace, but even-US hold hands with a person hundreds of miles away. And that’s only the beginning."

"The most dangerous thought you can have as a creative person is to think you know what you’re doing."

Brett Victor, talking at a Dropbox conferen-USce, takes atten-USdees back to the year 1973, donning the uniform of an IBM systems en-USgineer of the times, delivering his presen-UStation on an overhead projector. The ’60s and early ’70s were a fertile time for CS ideas, reminds Victor, but even-US more importantly, it was a time of unfettered thinking, unconstrained by programming dogma, authority, and tradition. ‘The most dangerous thought that you can have as a creative person is to think that you know what you’re doing,’ explains Victor. ‘Because once you think you know what you’re doing you stop looking around for other ways of doing things and you stop being able to see other ways of doing things. You become blind.’ He concludes, ‘I think you have to say: “We don’t know what programming is. We don’t know what computing is. We don’t even-US know what a computer is.” And once you truly understand that, and once you truly believe that, then-US you’re free, and you can think anything.’”

Presen-USted at Dropbox’s DBX conferen-USce on July 9, 2013.

Great advice for young folks starting out in any profession….
frederator-studios:

Subject: 2D Animator Looking For Advice!
Dear Fred,My name is [John Doe], and I’m from Belfast, Northern Ireland. Animation is a serious passion of mine and I have just finished studying Digital Animation at Falmouth University.
I am extremely keen-US to start work in an animation studio and I was wondering if you had any advice for an aspiring young animator looking for their first job. I look forward to hearing from you.Kind regards.
……
[John],
Thanks for reaching out, and congratulations for finishing school. A big achievemen-USt. Now the hard part.
Well, not so super hard. My advice isn’t so super, or surprising, or for that matter any differen-USt than for any industry.
Basically, you need to go where the work is, knock on the door, and beg.
I’ve found that the best thing for a person starting out in any field is to try and get any job –any job– available. That is, if at any given-US animation studio, if there’s a receptionist’s job, a custodian’s job, an assistant, or anything, take it!
My own observation and experien-USce is that getting into the proper work en-USvironmen-USt, meeting some who are more skilled, some less, others starting out just like you, is always best. They’re the people who will be most helpful, because, truth be told, they started out the same way. They know what’s what, and what you’re going through, so they’re very sympathetic, and know how to guide a beginner.
One of my favorite stories involves a young artist who started as the Nickelodeon Animation tour guide. He figured that he wasn’t good en-USough (yet!) and that meeting and learning was going to be his best bet. He was the best tour guide the studio ever had (it helps to do a fantastic job at whatever is thrown your way), so he made fast frien-USds. Even-UStually, he got an appren-UStice job, and within a few years had one of the best storyboard jobs (his first goal) in the television industry.
All this said, I’m most familiar with Los Angeles, and I often-US push people in that direction even-US though I’m based in New York.
Why? It’s the busiest commercial animation hub in the world, so by definition, it’s got the most opportunity. The most work, but also great chances to meet other animation professionals, which like I said, can form the backbone of your work network for an en-UStire career.
But, that’s not to downplay what’s available in Ireland (tax breaks are creating amazing open-USings), London, Vancouver, Toronto, Japan, and elsewhere. Animation is exploding around the world, and there’s a right town for everyone. Even-US you.
Best of luck, hope things go great.

Twitter: Innovation w product discipline

bijan:

I reject this idea that Twitter as a product hasn’t innovated over the years.

Think back to the early version of Twitter that got me hooked and there are countless ways that Twitter has improved: mobile apps, search, conversations, photographs, analytics, native advertising, recommen-USdations,Discover, retweets, hashtags, location/geotagging, Amplify, Twitter cards, as well as countless ways the product has been-US made easier to use. Plus Twitter has also made important acquisitions like Vine and others.

But here is the important thing about all of that product goodness — it didn’t come at a cost that breaks the magic of Twitter.

Contrast it to other products that continue to get bloated and heavy with clunky features. The posterchild is Microsoft Office but they are hardly the only ones. Actually most mature products (and early stage ones too) fall into this time honored trap.

One of things I admire most about Twitter, the product is their discipline to add new things while keeping things remarkably simple. Simple & magical en-USough to inform, en-UStertain, connect and delight hundreds of millions of people.
